According to the legend, King Attalos II of Pergamon who sought a place to build a new city asked his soldiers to find the “paradise on earth”. The soldiers sought for the paradise for a long time, then they finally decided that the place where Antalya is located today could be the “paradise on earth”. That is why Attalos II built the city there and named it “Attaleia”.
Antalya is indeed the most popular paradise in Turkey, which is covered with historical, cultural and natural treasures all over, and it is called Turkish Riviera.
As told in the legend, the city was built by King Attalos II of Pergamon between 138 and 159 BC. The region, being one of the most important areas of settlement in the Mediterranean, was called “Pamphylia” in ancient times. The historical and cultural value of the city was inherited from the Hittite, Lydian, Persia, Ion, Macedonian and Roman civilizations built in this region which has been famous for its unique geographical assets through centuries. Patara, Olympus, Phaselis, Myra, Termessos, Limyra and Side antique cities are the leading cultural assets of the city.
